Loving Our Guns to Death - The New York Times

“It’s an icon,” one owner told The New York Times in a 2018 feature on the AR-15 and similar weapons. “Stand out and blend in all at the same time,” reads one 2011 advertisement for a camouflage-finished assault-style rifle. But the question raised by the Maine shooting, and especially the lockdown that followed, is just how free that freedom is. How free are you really when you protest on behalf of a cause you believe in and are met on the street by armed counter-demonstrators? How free are you really when state authorities have to lock down a city so that they can stop a mass shooter from striking again?

It had a novel reloading system that functioned on the gun’s own hot gas, and a unique stock that kept the gun on target. In 1959, the gun company Colt acquired manufacturing and sublicensing rights to Stoner’s AR-15 and his gas system. It came equipped with a 20-round magazine, and in 1966, the military ordered more than 400,000 of the guns for its troops. That didn’t stop Colt from marketing to hunters a semiautomatic version — the “Sporter” — that carried a five-round magazine. The gun did not catch on, and the company produced only a few thousand a year.

On July 2022, the U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation banning assault-style weapons (here), (here). It says “all AR types,” specifically the AR-15, and the Kel-Tec Sub-2000, are among the firearms considered semiautomatic assault-style weapons. The suspect in the Nashville school shooting was armed with three firearms, two of which are considered assault-style weapons.
